Has Fear Been Taking Over Your Life?

Fear is an intense low energy-level frequency. We’ve all felt it somewhere in our life experience. Some might be feeling it right now. But what is fear really? Fear is a part of an adaptive response to threatening stimuli. It motivates a person to behave in a certain way, modulates our memory and directs our attention.

Fear prepares us to react to danger. Once we sense a potential danger, our heart rate rises, and blood flow to muscle increases the flow of hormones to an area of the brain known as the amygdala, which helps us focus on the presenting danger and stores it in our memory.

Studies show that the amygdala not only activates fear, anxiety and phobias, but a broad range of pleasant and unpleasant stimuli, including processing arousal, value, preference, relevance, impact, vigilance, surprise, associability, ambiguity or unpredictability.

Is it possible to experience fear because of trauma that didn't even happen to you?

Some researchers say yes, but descendants of slavery and attempted genocide display symptoms that are similar to those experienced by the people who endured the traumas themselves. As a result, communities of African Americans experience a shared sense of grief and ongoing fear compounded by the reality of ongoing discrimination and brutality. This impacts our thinking and decision-making in negative ways, leaving us susceptible to intense emotions and impulsive reactions.

How can you manage your fear triggers?

Try to learn more about your fear or anxiety. Keep an anxiety diary or thought record to note down when it happens and what happens.

Having supportive people in your life can help you manage your feelings of fear.

Practice mindfulness. Being mindful can help you manage them and replace negative thoughts with more helpful ones.

Practice deep breathing, visualization, muscle relaxation techniques, proper nutrition, rest and exercise.

If you or someone you know is experiencing fear all the time, or if it feels like your fears are taking over your life, then it’s a good idea to ask for help.
